Hi we are Julie and Sarah from “Grains of the Earth” and we wanted to give you a little insight about us and how we got started on this amazing journey.
We used to live in the big city where there was nothing but the sound of hustle and bustle. The important things in life were what kind of car do you drive, how much money do you make, and how big is your house. To be honest we both were fed up with that lifestyle, and needed a change. So we decided to downsize, to a tiny house and move up to the mountains in Northern California. We bought a little bit of land and got settled with us being completely off grid. Honestly, we would not have it any other way, as we can truly appreciate the nature that surrounds us.
We both love to be creative, and work with wood and natural resources, so we did a little research, and found that we are in a prime area to gather these materials. Well, why not take this a step further and offer our collected items to others who don’t have the same access to the mountains like we do, but also love to be creative the same way we do? And so, “Grains of the Earth” was born.
All of our wood, and varieties of pine cones are found in Northern California, near the Oregon border.
We get to spend the day hiking and exploring in our own backyard, looking for that perfect pine cone or piece of wood that has naturally fallen from a tree, leaving all the other pine cones as they are to germinate, and create more trees. We only collect from deadfall, we never collect from living trees, or gather from within protected forests.
