What is a Knobcone Pinecone?

A Knobcone pinecone (from the tree species Pinus attenuata) is the densest pinecone of any species of pinecones, meaning their wood is very hard and solid.

They have a 'knobby' shape, like a tortoise's shell, and range in length from 3 to 8 inches ( 8 to 16 cm) long and have a diameter of 2 to 4 inches in width (5 to 10 cm).

These unique pinecones are tightly closed and only open when exposed to heat of 220 F or warmer. Knobcone pinecones don’t easily fall out of trees like other pinecones do, as the base of the pinecone is embedded down the length of the branches of the tree as well as the tree trunk itself in clusters of 3 to 6 cones.

Fun Fact About Knobcone Pine Cones:  The only way a knobcone will open is when it is exposed to heat of 220 degrees or more, usually during a fire.  That being said, the pinecones remain at the top of the tree for up to 20 years after a fire has scorched and killed the tree. The heat from fires typically does not reach the top of the tree to open the pinecones. While the cones at the bottom of the tree where the fire has reached them, will open up and germinate. This is one tough pinecone!
